Our dedicated field staff are the vital link between life-saving rabies vaccines and the remote communities that need them most. They travel to hard-to-reach areas to lead mass dog vaccination campaigns, carefully registering and tracking each animal that is vaccinated.

Dr. Lankester has over 15 years of experience in directing rabies vaccination programs in East Africa and provides leadership to Rabies Free Africa.

Dr. Mwangi is an infectious disease epidemiologist and trained veterinarian who provides research and modeling expertise.

Global Rabies Expert

Dr. Cleaveland is a veterinary epidemiologist carrying out inter-disciplinary research investigating livestock and zoonotic diseases. Her research has focused on the epidemiology of zoonotic diseases in northern Tanzania, including rabies.

Dr. Frech is a senior biotech executive with 25 years of experience working in global vaccine and drug research. She holds a DVM from Washington State Unversity and serves as adjunct faculty for the Allen School.

Katie Hampson Headshot

Katie Hampson

Professor of Public Health and Disease Ecology & a Wellcome Senior Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow

Dr. Hampson leads a long-term study tracking rabies transmission in Tanzania through contact tracing and whole genome sequencing of rabies viruses. She works with teams from a range of countries conducting implementation research on One Health approaches to surveillance, dog vaccination and last mile access to lifesaving post-exposure vaccines.

Dr. Lugelo is a veterinary researcher and public health advocate. He works for Rabies Free Africa leading the delivery of mass dog rabies vaccinations and developed the innovative cooling solution for the storage of rabies vaccine locally.

Joel Changalucha is a public health researcher specializing in zoonotic diseases, with a primary focus on rabies control and prevention strategies. He currently serves as a Research Scientist, where he has devoted much of his career to improving rabies surveillance and intervention approaches in Tanzania.

His work emphasizes the integration of community-based approaches within veterinary systems particularly in Tanzania, where he conducted extensive evaluations of mass dog vaccination campaigns.

Dr. Lushasi is a field epidemiologist with more than a decade of experience in zoonoses implementation research, specializing in rabies control and prevention. He leads the rabies research group and has piloted and established an Integrated Bite Case Management system linking health and veterinary sectors across multiple regions in Tanzania.

Dr. Sambo is a field epidemiologist with more than 17 years of dedicated work in rabies research. With more than a decade of service at the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania & Free Rabies Africa, he has extensive experience and expertise in rapid response to disease outbreaks, particularly rabies.
